SheDecides in collaboration with Ipas Afrique Francophone, Rutgers, Le Centre ODAS, YUWA, Alliance des Jeunes Champion.nes pour l’Avortement Sécurisé en Afrique Francophone (AJCAF AS), and the Forum National de la Jeunesse du Cameroun (FONAJ) held a side event during the Global Youth Dialogue entitled “Generation Choix: Together for bodily autonomy! Participants honored intergenerational leaders who have courageously challenged taboos and dismantled barriers, empowering young people to take control of their bodies, their lives and their futures. Through lively discussions with experts, valuable perspectives were raised on the unique obstacles young people face in accessing safe abortion services. Participants were inspired by global advances in abortion rights, often led by courageous young activists defending the right to choose. Collective power was harnessed as voices, perspectives and experiences were creatively woven together through an #ArtsForAbortionRights canvas. Key messages highlighted the tragic consequences of unsafe abortion, the imperative of confidential and accessible abortion services for young people, and the importance of their involvement in decision-making processes. Comprehensive sexuality education, including accurate information on safe abortion care, was highlighted as essential. Recommendations emphasized solidarity, the need to collect and disseminate accurate data, and diversified awareness-raising methods adapted to the digital age. Innovative ideas included sharing acquired knowledge and strategies with local communities, continuing efforts to educate about sexual and reproductive health rights, and promoting the fundamental right of individuals to make choices about their bodies.
