The Government of Benin has adopted a decree setting out the conditions for voluntary interruption of pregnancy (VTP). This decision makes Benin one of the first countries in French-speaking Africa to have abortion legislation designed to protect the fundamental rights of women to access safe abortion care without fear of legal sanctions.

In May 2022, a forum was held in Conakry to co-create the alliance of young champions for safe abortion in French-speaking Africa, bringing together young champions of sexual and reproductive health rights and young feminists from 15 French-speaking African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Togo).
