A strong youth movement for safe abortion: Forum for the co-creation of the youth alliance for safe abortion in Francophone Africa

In May 2022, a forum was held in Conakry to co-create the alliance of young champions for safe abortion in French-speaking Africa, bringing together young champions of sexual and reproductive health rights and young feminists from 15 French-speaking African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Togo).

The aim was to strengthen the youth movement for safe abortion in Francophone Africa and lay the foundations for a youth alliance for safe abortion in the region, by defining operating and communication procedures, as well as setting up an innovative, inclusive and participative coordinating body to promote and strengthen the effective commitment of young people to widening access to safe abortion for young people in the region.

The forum led to the creation of a youth alliance for safe abortion in French-speaking Africa, with the support of the ODAS Center and its partners.

The alliance has also worked with expert partners (Ipas Afrique Francophone, Equipop, Population Reference Bureau, Youth Activist Network, Global Fund for Women) to build the capacity of its members in various fields, such as opposition management, political communication, feminist communication, social movement building and financing.

The alliance is independent and works in concert with the ODAS Centre and all partners of the ODAS movement to promote the rights and access to safe abortion of young people in all French-speaking African countries. It is with great enthusiasm that we support the alliance in the organization of the 1st Dialogue des Jeunes pour l’Avortement Sécurisé (Youth Dialogue for Safe Abortion ) to exchange on priorities and experiences, the vision of the youth movement for safe abortion. The alliance is committed to advancing the rights and access to safe abortion for all in the region.
